If you are a meat lover then chances are you are a bacon lover and chances are you consume almost all of it with your breakfast eggs. But bacon is versatile and adds an amazing layer of flavor to just about anything you can think of. An easy way to make sure you get the most out of your next pack of bacon is to cut open the pack and separate it into sections.
- Cut off the majority of the fat in big chunks, put in a baggie and freeze. This bacon fat can be used to fry just about anything and the bacon flavor will be added to the food and the amazing aroma will fill the kitchen. This also makes the bacon itself much leaner when consumed.
- With the remainder of the meat use the best pieces and fry the strips in a pan. Cook at least ½ way through then remove from pan and pat dry using paper towel. Store in fridge for quick use anytime. The bacon will cook in ½ the time and will last a lot longer in the fridge once it is cooked.
- Any tiny pieces can be cooked up as well and stored. They are perfect to use as a salad topper or in an omelet.
- Now add about ¼ cup of water to the pan with the bacon drippings and bring to a boil. Gently scrape the bacon drippings off the pan and into the water. Pour that water into a jar and freeze. This water can then be added to a soup, stew or gravy as a flavor boost.
This method gives you a bacon flavor to add to your next soup or stew, real bacon bits for your next salad, and bacon strips you can use for breakfast or add to a sandwich. If you do this every time you open a pack of bacon you will never throw out another slice because it went bad before you finished the pack. This will save you money and give you bacon to use in several meals throughout the week.
